Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), also known as Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), adds an extra layer of security to your PKB account. Here's what you need to know about 2FA with Patients Know Best.
Important: 2FA Is Optional for PKB Users
Most PKB users do not need an authenticator app to access their health records.
- If you use NHS Login: You already have security through NHS Login's verification process. You do not need to set up additional 2FA for PKB.
- If you log in with PKB directly: 2FA is an optional security feature you can choose to enable, but it is not required.
Two Ways to Log In to PKB
NHS Login (Recommended)
Uses the NHS's security system with text message codes or biometric login
- Does not require a separate authenticator app
- Most users in England use this method
Direct PKB Login
- Uses your PKB email and password
- Optional 2FA can be added for extra security
- Only needs an authenticator app if you choose to enable 2FA
Setting Up 2FA for Direct PKB Login (Optional)
If you choose to add 2FA to your direct PKB login:
- Download an authenticator app such as:
- Google Authenticator
- Microsoft Authenticator
- Authy
- Any other compatible TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password) app
- In PKB, go to Profile > Security > Two-Factor Authentication
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect your authenticator app
