We understand how important it is to easily access your regular medications. Currently, the PKB system does not support ordering repeat prescriptions directly. However, there are several convenient ways you can still get your medication.
Here’s what we recommend:
1. Use the NHS App or your NHS account online:
What is it? The NHS App is a simple and secure way to access a range of NHS services on your smartphone or tablet. You can also log in to your NHS account through the NHS website.
How it helps: Many GP practices are connected to the NHS App, allowing you to view your available repeat prescriptions, order what you need, and choose a pharmacy to send them to. You can often track the status of your request too.
Getting started: Download the NHS App from your app store or visit the NHS website to log in or create an account. You'll usually need to be registered with a GP surgery in England and be aged 13 or over.
2. Contact your GP practice directly:
When to do this: If your GP practice isn't connected to the NHS App for prescription orders, or if you prefer not to use an app, getting in touch with them directly is a good option.
How to do it: You can usually call your GP practice to ask about ordering your repeat medication. They will let you know their specific process. Some practices may also accept written requests dropped off at the surgery.
What to have ready: When you contact them, they will likely need to confirm your identity and the details of the medication you require.
3. Check if your GP practice has its own online service:
What to look for: Some GP practices offer their own dedicated online portals or use other approved online services (like Patient Access or SystmOnline) for tasks like ordering repeat prescriptions.
How to find out: The best way to know if your practice offers this is to visit their website or ask at the reception. They can guide you on how to register and use their specific system.
Benefits: These services, much like the NHS App, can save you a trip or phone call and allow you to request medication at a time that suits you.
Order in good time:
It’s best to order your repeat prescription about 5-7 working days before you run out of your medication. This allows time for your GP practice to process the request and for the pharmacy to prepare your prescription.
Nominate a pharmacy: If you use the NHS App or another online service, you can usually nominate a preferred pharmacy. This means your approved prescription will be sent there electronically, ready for you to collect. Some pharmacies may also offer a delivery service.
