Who can access an adult’s PKB record?

Adults (aged 16 and over) have full control over their own health records in PKB. If they need support managing their health, they can invite a trusted person such as a family member or friend, to access their record as a carer.

If the person you care for isn’t able to manage their own record, their healthcare team may be able to arrange access for you.

What is a carer in PKB?

A carer in PKB is someone the patient trusts to help with their health record. Carers can view and manage records, making it easier to stay on top of appointments, medications, and care plans.

How to become a carer for an adult

Registering your own PKB account

If you live in England and don’t have a PKB account yet, you can create one using NHS login. Once you’re set up, the person you care for or their healthcare team can invite you to access their record.

You can sign up here: Register for Patients Know Best

Getting an invitation from the person you care for

The person you support can invite you to access their record by:

  • Going to the Sharing section in PKB.
  • Selecting Friends/Family.
  • Clicking Invite someone and entering your details.

You’ll get an email with a link to accept the invitation. If you don’t have a PKB account yet, the link will guide you through setting one up before granting access.

Requesting access for someone who can’t manage their record

If the person you care for isn’t able to manage their record, talk to their healthcare team. In some cases, they may be able to give you access, especially if there’s a legal arrangement in place, such as a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for health and welfare.

Managing your carer role

Once you’re set up as a carer, you can:

  • View and manage the adult’s record.
  • See and manage who else has access under Sharing > Friends/Family.
  • Remove yourself or update permissions through PKB’s settings.
  • Help the person you care for stay on top of their health information.
